Its actually more restrictive than the SD cards because at least you can take the card out and put it into another device. Basically if you lose your device, you've lost your maps. You cannot unlink maps from a device, so for example, if you sell or lose a device you cannot just replace it and tell Garmin your maps belong to the new one. This is another big point of contention in the Garmin world. Garmin used to allow you to link the maps to 2 devices, but now its only one. When you install the DVD on your PC you have to register it on the Garmin website as "belonging" to a particular Garmin device serial number. What's to stop you putting it onto more devices? If it's on a disk, how do you get it onto a device without copying it? Some of the Garmin mapping is available as a CD or DVD.
